Verified practical details
You don't need a visa to enter Maldives, but here are some practical details worth knowing before you travel:
Authorisation system
IMUGA (traveller declaration)
The Maldives requires no advance visa for tourists: the 30-day visa is granted free on arrival. What is compulsory for every foreigner, children included, is submitting the traveller declaration (IMUGA) online within 96 hours before arrival. It is free and each traveller files their own.
Apply on the official site →Fee
The 30-day tourist visa is granted free on arrival, and the IMUGA declaration is also free of charge.
Required documents
- Passport with a machine-readable zone (MRZ) and at least one month's validity, according to Maldives Immigration. Passports whose validity has been extended are not accepted. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs asks for six months and warns that anyone without them will be sent back: six months satisfies both.
- A complete itinerary: a confirmed return or onward ticket within 30 days, a prepaid confirmed booking at a registered facility and enough funds for the stay. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs puts those funds at a minimum of 100 dollars plus 50 per day.
- The IMUGA traveller declaration, submitted within 96 hours before arrival. Minors also need their own passport.
- Meeting the entry requirements of the next destination, including visa and passport validity.
- Since 15 April 2025 entry is not granted on Israeli passports.
Health insurance
Not mandatory for this destination.
When travel insurance is mandatory → Travel insurance policies ↓Transit rules
The Maldives treats as transit travellers those continuing to another country without clearing immigration. The 30-day tourist visa can be extended from within the country as long as it has not expired, and Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs urges applying in good time to avoid overstaying and fines. A complete itinerary does not guarantee entry: the immigration officer at the port of entry decides, under Sections 7 and 8 of the Maldives Immigration Act 2007.
