Entry requirements

Mexico visa requirements for Nicaraguan citizens

Nicaraguan citizens need a visa for Mexico and must apply for it before the trip at a consulate or embassy.

Consular fee
983 MXN
Minimum passport validity
No minimum: it just has to be valid

How this visa is processed

Consular Section of the Embassy of Mexico in Nicaragua (Managua), with an appointment through MiConsulado

Nicaraguans need a visa to enter Mexico and also to transit through it. They do not need one if they hold a valid multiple-entry visa from Canada, the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom or a Schengen country, or permanent residence in one of those countries or in Chile or Colombia. The application is made in person at the Embassy of Mexico in Managua, open Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 12:00, with an appointment booked beforehand through the MiConsulado system. The appointment confirmation must be brought printed to be let in, and the name on the appointment must match the passport exactly or the application is not accepted. The visa depends on the requirements and a satisfactory consular interview, and the consular section may ask for more documents. Documents handed in are not returned even if the visa is refused, and submitting false documents disqualifies the applicant and can lead to an immigration alert of up to five years. A minor must attend with both parents to sign the application, unless a court has given parental authority to one parent or the parent abroad provides a power of attorney.

Verified practical details

You'll need to apply for a visa at a consulate or embassy before travelling. Here are the practical details we've verified:

Authorisation system

FMM (Multiple Immigration Form) / SAE (Electronic Authorisation System)

The FMM is the National Immigration Institute (INM) document that records a stay as a visitor without permission to carry out paid activities (tourism, business, transit), valid for up to 180 days. If you arrive by air you no longer fill it in: the officer stamps your passport and writes the departure date according to the days granted, and the digital FMM can then be downloaded from the INM portal. The SAE is an electronic authorisation only for nationals of Russia, Ukraine and Turkey travelling by air: it takes the place of a visa, is valid for 30 days from issue and covers a single trip. Those travellers need a visa to enter by land or sea.

Fee

983 MXN

This is the fee for the document of a visitor without permission to carry out paid activities (Federal Duties Law, Art. 8). If you arrive by air, the airline collects it and it is usually included in the ticket. If you enter by land, it is not charged when the stay is 7 days or less; if it is longer, you pay it when you leave the country.

Required documents

  • A passport or identity and travel document valid under current international law, to be presented at the INM immigration checkpoint (Migration Act, Art. 37(I)(a))
  • A validly issued, in-force visa where one is required. It is not needed by nationals of countries with which Mexico has signed a visa waiver agreement, or which Mexico has exempted unilaterally (Art. 37(I)(b) and 37(III)(a))
  • Providing whatever information and personal details the competent authorities ask for at the immigration checkpoint (Art. 37(II))
  • If you already live in Mexico, a residence card or a stay authorisation as a regional visitor, border worker visitor or humanitarian visitor takes the place of a visa (Art. 37(I)(c))

How much money you need to show

An average monthly balance of 79,770.80 Mexican pesos over the last three months (680 days of UMA)

This is the financial means test for the visitor visa without permission to work. A job or pension paying more than 25,808.20 pesos a month net (220 days of UMA) over the last three months, with a year in the job, also counts, as does showing ties to home: property in your name for two years plus a job or business of at least two years. Over-65s travelling as tourists do not have to show financial means. The UMA is the reference unit used in Mexican law and its value changes every February, so the peso amounts do too.

Health insurance

Not mandatory for this destination.

Transit rules

Mexico has no separate transit category: transit sits inside the "visitor without permission to carry out paid activities" stay condition, the same one that covers tourism and business trips. The document is the Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMM), valid for a maximum of 180 calendar days and good for a single entry; its validity runs from the moment the immigration stamp is applied, not from when it was issued.
