What draws travelers to Mexico

Mexico is traveled by region, and it is worth checking the travel-advisory map first. The Yucatán Peninsula gathers the Caribbean beaches (Cancún, Tulum, the island of Cozumel), the colonial city of Mérida and the Maya ruins of Chichén Itzá, one of the new seven wonders; the states of Yucatán and Quintana Roo sit at the lowest advisory level. The historic centre revolves around Mexico City — its Zócalo, the Anthropology Museum, nearby Teotihuacan — and the colonial cities of Puebla, Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende. Oaxaca combines the city, the food and the Zapotec site of Monte Albán. Baja California Sur (Los Cabos, La Paz) is whales and coastal desert. Mexico has 35 UNESCO World Heritage sites, the most in the Americas. Important note: six states — Colima, Guerrero (home to Acapulco), Michoacán, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas and Zacatecas — are at "Do Not Travel" under the U.S. State Department in 2026; the usual tourist destinations fall outside that list, but plan the route accordingly.
