Authorisation system

e-Visa or visa on arrival, plus the health travel form

A visa is required to enter, whatever the passport. It can be requested online on the website run by the Immigration Department, paying by card and getting an authorisation for it to be issued on arrival at Lungi airport, or, for visits and business, paid on arrival in cash in US dollars. A single-entry visa is valid for 90 days from issue for a visit of up to 30 days; a multiple-entry visa is valid for a year, with visits of up to 30 days each. Extensions are requested at the Immigration Department in Freetown. Since 18 June 2026 every traveller entering or leaving the country completes the health and travel information form on the official portal within the 72 hours before travel, and must keep the QR code.

Required documents

  • Passport valid for at least six months after entering the country.
  • A visa, online or paid on arrival.
  • Health and travel information form completed within the previous 72 hours, with the QR confirmation code.
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate.

Transit rules

Giving false or incomplete information on the health form can lead to delays, refusal of entry or exit, or extra checks. Every traveller goes through a compulsory diamond export check, and taking precious stones out requires an export licence; smuggling is severely punished. Demonstrations are possible, and at times curfews or land border closures.
