Verified practical details

You don't need a visa to enter Montenegro, but here are some practical details worth knowing before you travel:

Authorisation system

Visa exemption up to 90 days in 180 (no advance formality)

Montenegro is not part of the Schengen area: days spent there do not count towards the Schengen 90 days, or vice versa. Check that your passport is stamped on entry and exit, because that is what proves how long you have stayed.

Required documents

  • Passport valid for at least three months after the planned departure. Without a valid document entry is refused.
  • A document reported lost or stolen that later turned up is still listed as stolen unless the police were told it had been found, and entry is refused.
  • Registration with the local tourist office or the police within 24 hours of arrival. Hotels and some holiday lets do it for you; in private accommodation, make sure it is done.
  • Medicines containing narcotics: declare them on arrival; only 30 days' supply is allowed, with a prescription or doctor's certificate less than 90 days old.

Transit rules

Anyone arriving by boat must enter only at a designated port; if that is not possible, notify the harbour master or the police beforehand. The authorities may close land border crossings at short notice.
