Peru visa requirements for Vietnamese citizens

In the Peruvian foreign ministry's official visa requirements table, Viet Nam appears with "SI" in both columns, tourism and business: there is no exemption by passport. Here is the detail that most confuses travellers from the region. Peru does have an exemption route for holders of a visa with at least six months' validity from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia or a Schengen country, or permanent residence in them, but that route was created by two supreme decrees with named addressees, D. S. 069-2016-RE for the People's Republic of China and D. S. 006-2017-RE for India. A Vietnamese passport with a valid US visa still needs the Peruvian visa. The process starts on the foreign ministry's online consular platform, where the application is registered and the documents uploaded, and closes with a personal interview at the consular section in Hanoi. The consular fee for the tourist visa is USD 30 and the passport must have six months' validity from the date of entry. The tourist visa allows up to 183 calendar days within twelve months, in one visit or several, with no extension.

Required documents

• Passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry to Peru, with at least 3 blank pages
• Visa application form completed on a computer
• Letter of request addressed to the Consulate, explaining the purpose of travel and approximate dates of stay
• Two color passport-size photographs
• Apostilled criminal record certificate (no older than 3 months, adults only)
• Proof of financial means (recent bank statement)
• Hotel reservation or invitation letter from a direct family member
• Onward or return ticket from Peru

Vaccinations

• No mandatory vaccines for entering Peru. The Ministry of Health recommends (does not require) the yellow fever vaccine, at least 10 days before travel, for those visiting Amazon rainforest areas below 2,300 m: San Martín, Ucayali, Amazonas, Loreto, Madre de Dios, and parts of Junín, Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Cusco, Pasco, Puno, Huánuco and Huancavelica. It is not recommended for Lima, the city of Cusco, Machu Picchu or the Inca Trail. Some countries ask for the certificate from travellers who have previously been in risk areas of Peru.

Transit rules

The immigration authority sets the authorized stay on entry, which cannot exceed 183 accumulated days per year. Extensions are no longer generally available, except for nationals of Bolivia, Colombia, and Ecuador.

Customs limits

Cash

Declare to SUNAT if carrying more than US$10,000 in cash or negotiable financial instruments; amounts over US$30,000 are not permitted to enter.

Alcohol

Up to 3 liters of liquor, only for those over 18.

Tobacco

Up to 20 packs of cigarettes, or 50 cigars, or 250 grams of loose or shredded tobacco, only for those over 18.

Overstay penalties

A fine of S/5.50 per day of overstay (0.1% of the current UIT tax unit), payable before leaving the country; overstays beyond 60 days can also trigger a migration alert or restrictions on future entry. Legal basis: Legislative Decree No. 1350 (Migration Law) and its Regulation (Supreme Decree No. 007-2017-IN).

Common reasons for denial

• Reasons of national security, public health, internal order, public order or citizen security: Article 45 allows both entry and transit of foreign nationals to be limited on those grounds, applying the principles of proportionality and sovereignty.
• Refusing to register your biometric information during migration control: Migraciones may refuse you entry to the national territory on that basis alone.
