Peru sets its entry regime by nationality: most passports from the Americas and Western Europe enter visa-free for up to 90 or 183 days depending on the country, while other nationalities need a consular visa. As a Mercosur associate state, Peru allows citizens of the bloc's member and associate countries to enter with just their national ID card, without a passport.

Do you need a different visa for Lima, Cusco, or Arequipa?

No. Peru sets the requirements, so entering through Lima asks for the same as entering through Cusco or Arequipa. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travelers to Peru

Peru combines coast, Andes and Amazon, but almost every trip revolves around Cusco. The old Inca capital — a World Heritage site, with the Sacsayhuamán fortress — is the base for the Sacred Valley and for Machu Picchu, the 15th-century Inca citadel and the country's biggest draw, reached by train or the Inca Trail. Lima, the capital, is now one of South Americas culinary capitals, with a historic centre also World Heritage. Lake Titicaca, the Colca canyon and the Madre de Dios rainforest extend the route. Peru has 13 UNESCO World Heritage sites. Ten days cover Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu with time to acclimatize to the altitude. The dry season in the Andes (May-September) is best for Machu Picchu; on the coast, Lima's sky is overcast much of the year.
