Peru sets its entry regime by nationality: most passports from the Americas and Western Europe enter visa-free for up to 90 or 183 days depending on the country, while other nationalities need a consular visa. As a Mercosur associate state, Peru allows citizens of the bloc's member and associate countries to enter with just their national ID card, without a passport.

Peru rules for every passport
Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.
Vaccinations
- No mandatory vaccines for entering Peru. The Ministry of Health recommends (does not require) the yellow fever vaccine, at least 10 days before travel, for those visiting Amazon rainforest areas below 2,300 m: San Martín, Ucayali, Amazonas, Loreto, Madre de Dios, and parts of Junín, Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Cusco, Pasco, Puno, Huánuco and Huancavelica. It is not recommended for Lima, the city of Cusco, Machu Picchu or the Inca Trail. Some countries ask for the certificate from travellers who have previously been in risk areas of Peru.
Customs limits
- Cash
- Declare to SUNAT if carrying more than US$10,000 in cash or negotiable financial instruments; amounts over US$30,000 are not permitted to enter.
- Alcohol
- Up to 3 litres of liquor, only for those over 18.
- Tobacco
- Up to 20 packs of cigarettes, or 50 cigars, or 250 grams of loose or shredded tobacco, only for those over 18.
Overstay penalties
A fine of 0.1% of the UIT tax unit for each day beyond the authorised stay. With the 2026 UIT (S/ 5,500) that comes to S/ 5.50 per day. The fine is collected when you leave the country. Anyone left in an irregular situation by overstaying who does not apply to regularise can be ordered to leave, with a re-entry ban of up to 5 years; a repeat offence or failing to leave leads to expulsion, with a ban of up to 15 years. Legal basis: Legislative Decree No. 1350 (Migration Law), Articles 54, 56, 57 and 58 as worded by Legislative Decree No. 1582, and its Regulation (Supreme Decree No. 007-2017-IN).
Grounds for refusal
- Reasons of national security, public health, internal order, public order or citizen security: Article 45 allows both entry and transit of foreign nationals to be limited on those grounds, applying the principles of proportionality and sovereignty.
- Refusing to register your biometric information during migration control: Migraciones may refuse you entry to the national territory on that basis alone.

Do you need a different visa for Lima, Cusco, or Arequipa?
No. Peru sets the requirements, so entering through Lima asks for the same as entering through Cusco or Arequipa. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.
What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.
What draws travellers to Peru
Peru combines coast, Andes and Amazon, but almost every trip revolves around Cusco. The old Inca capital: a World Heritage site, with the Sacsayhuamán fortress: is the base for the Sacred Valley and for Machu Picchu, the 15th-century Inca citadel and the country's biggest draw, reached by train or the Inca Trail. Lima, the capital, is now one of South Americas culinary capitals, with a historic centre also World Heritage. Lake Titicaca, the Colca canyon and the Madre de Dios rainforest extend the route. Peru has 13 UNESCO World Heritage sites. Ten days cover Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu with time to acclimatize to the altitude. The dry season in the Andes (May-September) is best for Machu Picchu; on the coast, Lima's sky is overcast much of the year.
