How this visa is processed
Consular Section of the Embassy of Japan in Quito (Av. Amazonas N39-123 y José Arizaga, Amazonas Plaza building, 11th floor), in person and by appointment
An Ecuadorian needs a visa to enter Japan; only diplomatic passports are exempt. The only office authorised to issue it in the country is the Embassy of Japan in Quito, and the application is personal and in person: anyone living far from Quito cannot send someone else to lodge the papers, although a third party may collect the passport if the visa is approved. Appointments are requested from the Consular Section, and the embassy recommends doing so about four months ahead because demand is high, especially in February, March and July. Yet the application cannot be lodged more than three months before entering Japan, because the visa expires three months after issue. For tourism or a family visit you hand in, unstapled and unpunched, the form with a 4.5 × 3.5 cm photo, the itinerary in the official format, the full flight booking from leaving Ecuador until returning, a bank balance certificate with signature and stamp, your ID card and passport with copies, and copies of any visas you hold for other countries. The embassy advises against buying tickets or tours before the visa is granted. Processing takes one or two working weeks, and the passport stays at the embassy meanwhile. Since 1 July 2026 the fee is 101 USD for a single entry (201 USD for a double entry, only in specific cases), in cash and in the exact amount when you collect the visa. The transit visa was abolished that same day: anyone leaving the airport during a stopover needs a short-stay visa. A United States visa does not allow entry into Japan.

When travel insurance is mandatory → Travel insurance policies ↓Transit rules
Japan has its own mechanism for transit: the transit landing permission. If you are travelling onward to a destination outside Japan, it lets you land temporarily for up to 72 hours to rest or shop in the vicinity of the port or airport of call. There is a useful variant where your itinerary is not a round trip through the same place: you may make a stop and leave Japan from another port of entry and departure near the one you arrived at, within three days.
