Morocco visa requirements for Uruguayan citizens

Consulate General of the Kingdom of Morocco in Montevideo (or the Embassy of Morocco in Buenos Aires)

Unlike Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico or Peru, Uruguay is not on the list of countries whose nationals enter Morocco visa-free, so a Uruguayan passport needs a visa for tourism. Uruguay is also not among the nationalities that can apply for the Moroccan e-Visa on the passport alone (that list is limited to a specific group of countries such as India, Israel, Thailand, Vietnam or Guatemala). The e-Visa may still be open to a Uruguayan who holds a valid visa or residence from the European Union/Schengen, the United States or the United Kingdom — check the current list and conditions on the official portal acces-maroc.ma before ruling this route out. Anyone who does not fit that case applies for the consular visa at the Consulate General of Morocco in Montevideo (Reconquista 517, 8th floor), the only Moroccan mission in the country; the Embassy of Morocco in Buenos Aires covers the region as an alternative. A passport with at least six months' validity and proof of an onward ticket out of Morocco are required.

Required documents

• Passport valid for at least 6 months after the stay.
• Passport-style photo, white background.
• Return or onward ticket.
• Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter).
• Proof of sufficient funds.

Vaccinations

• No mandatory vaccines for entry: no international certificate of vaccination (yellow fever included) is required under the International Health Regulations.

Transit rules

Morocco's transit visa authorises you to cross the country's territory on the way to a third State. It is issued for one or two transits, and the stay for each may not exceed 72 hours. In exceptional cases the security services may issue short-stay and transit visas at the border post itself. One limitation to keep in mind before entering: once inside Morocco, changing the type of visa already obtained is not allowed.

Cash

Declare currency if it exceeds approximately 100,000 MAD equivalent (sources don't fully agree; verify the exact figure with Moroccan customs — douane.gov.ma — before publishing).

Alcohol

1 liter of wine + 1 liter of spirits per person, not combinable between travelers.

Tobacco

No declaration or formality, for the non-resident traveller’s personal consumption: 200 cigarettes, or 100 cigarillos, or 25 cigars, or 250 g of assorted tobacco.

Overstay penalties

Article 42 of Law 02-03 punishes with a fine of 2,000 to 20,000 dirhams and imprisonment of one to six months — or just one of the two penalties — any foreigner who enters or attempts to enter Morocco in breach of Article 3, or who has remained on Moroccan territory beyond the duration authorised by their visa, save for force majeure or excuses recognised as valid. On a repeat offence the penalty is doubled. The administrative authority may also, on grounds of security and public order, expel you to your country of nationality or to another country according to what you yourself state. If you want to extend your stay in time, the route is to request authorisation from the Directorate General of National Security before it runs out.

Common reasons for denial

• Being unable to show your means of existence: the border check may cover, beyond documents, your means of support, your reasons for coming to Morocco, and the guarantees of your repatriation.
• Not meeting the documentary obligations of Article 3, or not satisfying the justifications required by immigration law and regulations: the border control authority may refuse entry on that basis.
• Your presence constituting a threat to public order.
• Being subject to a territorial ban or to an expulsion order.
• Worth knowing your rights if you are refused: you may notify, or have someone notify, the person whose home you were going to, your country’s consulate, or a lawyer of your choosing. The refusal decision may be executed ex officio, and meanwhile you may be held in the premises provided for in Article 34.
