Turkey sets its entry regime by nationality: some passports enter visa-free for tourism, others need to apply for an online e-Visa before traveling, and the rest need a traditional consular visa. The Turkish e-Visa is only issued through the official evisa.gov.tr portal, taking about three minutes: many third-party sites overcharge for the same process while posing as the official channel.

Turkey rules for every passport
Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.
Vaccinations
- No mandatory vaccines for entry. The international vaccination certificate is asked of nobody: not the yellow fever one, and not even of travellers arriving from a country with risk of transmission. That is what the country has declared in the International Health Regulations list.
Customs limits
- Cash
- Declare if carrying TRY 185,000 or €10,000 (or the equivalent) or more in cash when leaving Turkey; customs officers may ask for an explanation of the source even below that threshold.
- Alcohol
- 1 litre of drinks over 22% alcohol and 2 litres of drinks up to 22%, duty-free. Each limit applies separately, and only to travellers aged 18 or over.
- Tobacco
- 600 cigarettes, 100 cigarillos, 50 cigars, 250 g of rolling tobacco (with 200 cigarette papers) and 250 g of pipe tobacco, duty-free. Each limit applies separately, and only to travellers aged 18 or over.
Overstay penalties
Türkiye grades its entry ban by how far you overstayed. Up to 3 months over, someone who comes to a border gate of their own accord to leave before the authorities detect their situation may settle it by paying an administrative fine. Beyond that the ban escalates: 3 to 6 months over, a 1-month ban; 6 months to 1 year, 3 months; 1 to 2 years, 1 year; and 2 to 3 years, a 2-year ban. Entry bans may not exceed five years, unless there is a serious threat to public order or public security, in which case the period may be extended by a maximum of ten further years.
Grounds for refusal
- Holding a passport that does not cover the 60 days of validity required beyond your permitted duration of stay: that alone is a ground for refusal at the border, even where the visa or e-Visa is in order.
- Being subject to a live entry ban for having previously overstayed your legal stay.

Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

Do you need a different visa for Istanbul, Antalya, or Ankara?
No. Turkey sets the requirements, so entering through Istanbul asks for the same as entering through Antalya or Ankara. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.
What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.
What draws travellers to Turkey
Turkey spans two continents and several different trips. Istanbul, straddling Europe and Asia, packs Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace and the Grand Bazaar into its World Heritage historic peninsula. Cappadocia, in central Anatolia, is the landscape of fairy chimneys, rock-cut churches and underground cities, and the home of the sunrise balloon flights. The Aegean and Mediterranean coast gathers the ruins of Ephesus, the white travertine terraces of Pamukkale and the southern beaches. Turkey has 21 UNESCO World Heritage sites. Ten days allow Istanbul, Cappadocia and some coast. Spring and autumn are the best seasons; summer is fierce inland. Official advisories warn against the border strip with Syria and Iraq in the south-east, well away from the usual tourist routes.
